When I turn on my (corded) lawnmower it makes a thumping noise, is this normal?

This is quite normal. The motor is electromagnetic and, depending on how it captures the flow of electricity, it may make a loud noise (similar to clapping) when first switched on, but this does not mean the mower is defective or unsafe to use.
